Artist's Comments

This piece was inspired by the Renaissance paintings of the Archangel Michael fighting demons. It seemed such a popular motif for decades, and the paintings are amazingly similar in their drama and dynamism.

Angels traditionally depicted in stained glass have been very still and staid. I wanted to covey that sense of strength and energy.

This piece was crafted in the traditional lead came method, (as opposed to the copper foil or "Tiffany" method). This technique, where each piece of glass is hand cut, ground, leaded, soldered, puttied and finished has remained virtually unchanged from the Middle Ages. It features nearly 50 pieces of heavily beveled clear class in the borders, wings and halo.

Winged by ~indeestudios. ~indeestudios makes warm and cold glass art and has also made patterns and tutorials for helping others create stained glass works. This stained glass panel has textured glass in the wings and the wonderful depth of the beveled glass was used in the wings, halo, and borders. The angel himself was airbrushed with glass enamels. Wow. Much More dynamic and engaging than the "still" angels that you mention in the artists comments. Awesome work.

This is gorgeous, so full of motion and life!

...and each piece is a separate bit of art in itself...:faint: You must have an enormous amount of patience, and it shows.

Thank you! It does take quite a lot of patience, which I sometimes have and sometimes don't! This particular piece took a lot; not so much in its construction, but in the design phase. I had the figure drawn up for over a year, trying different background motifs, before I came up with the visually simple square border. I almost gave up on it ever getting built!

Thank you all for your comments! I had such a love/hate relationship with this piece. The image of the angel came to me complete, but it took forever to figure out what should be done with him! It honestly wasn't until after he was sold that I was able to look at it objectively and see it for the effective piece it was.

I think the use of beveled glass in the top feathers of the wings really adds to the visual interest and dynamics of light playing over the work. The textured glass for the primary feathers compliments it, likewise, and really looks like the texture you'd expect in those feathers.

 This is lovely.

Making fun of the powerful is Bravery, because they can make you pay for what you say. This is why Satire is the weapon of the Clever Courageous. Making fun of someone weaker than you are, that is merely Cowardice.

maybe figure its too dark and sword its no realy good cause its like pirates sword and about composition bottom part needs to end (like corner) cause now it looks like part of work but whatever i realy like other things its realy good work ;)
:iconkalafat:
